Variciose Veins


Varicose means ‘grapelike’ and originated from the Greeks; being use by Hippocrates in 460BC. Throughout time, the treatments for varicose veins and thread veins has evolved and indeed continues to evolve to new improved levels, as the demand for better aesthetically pleasing surgeries and better long term results increases.

Varicose Veins are essentially veins that have become enlarged and tortuous.

Varicose Vein and normal leg diagramThe term 'varicose veins' commonly refers to dilation of the veins on the legs, although varicose veins can occur elsewhere, when they are more often known as “Varices”.

Failure of the valves with in the veins, allows backwards flow of blood, instead of it moving out of the legs. This increases the pressure on the veins and leads to distension of the vessel until they become visible and tortuous.

Although Laser treatment of varicose veins offers excellent results with out any significant downside, there are a range of other options which ought to be considered before treatment is taken up.
