Acne is a common problem to all skin types that can affect all ages both physically and emotionally. It is the most common of skin complaints and affects over 90% of adolescents. Whilst it affects a high proportional of adolescents in may appear for the first time in the mid twenties or even later and can affect people into their forties and fifties.
The cause of Acne

The exact cause of acne is not clearly understood but what we know is there are factors that are important in the cause of acne.
  • Sebaceous glands produce oil resulting in an oily complexion
  • Dead skin, near the hair follicle can block the pore
  • Bacteria P.Acnes grows and spreads in retained oil causing pimples
  • Inflammation damages cells that make collagen resulting in thinner skin and sunken scars
Acne treatments

There are 4 types of scarring that is caused by acne
  • Icepick scars
  • Boxcar scars
  • Rolling scars
  • Hypertrophic scars
All can be treated with the Fotona Nd:YAG lasers or a combination of Nd:YAG and Er:YAG depending on the type of scar.

Er:YAG approach

An Er:YAG laser uses a fractional approach that means a matrix of microscopic laser beams about the width of a human hair drill into the skin of the scar leaving the surrounding tissues intact and so promoting rapid healing of the area. The Er:YAG laser also works by removing the upper layer of skin revealing a fresher more youthful skin beneath.

Nd:YAG approach

The Nd:YAG laser uses the laser energy to gently heat up the lower layers of the skin producing collagen that stimulates a healing response. The healing response acts as a new foundation for the skin supporting the acne and smooths out the furrows.

Nd:YAG or Er:YAG

The successful treatment of Acne depends on the severity of the condition but generally the more severe the greater the number of treatments. There may also be other method of treatments that are recommended before Laser treatment such as medication or microdermabrasion.
