  • Cheeks
  • Lips
  • Forehead
  • Nose
People with a high proportion if melanin in their skin are more prone to the development of Melasma.

What are the causes of Melasma?

Melasma is a result of an increase in the production of melanin within the skin. The exact causes of Melasma are unknown but there are four factors that we know contribute to Melasma as well as pregnancy that is also known to trigger Melasma

  • Genetics
  • Hormones
  • Sun Exposure
  • Skin Inflammation
Who does Melasma affect?

Melasma is more common in women than it is in men and is also more common with people with darker skin tones. The majority of Melasma suffers are seen during pregnancy or women taking a birth control pill or hormone replacement therapy. There is also the genetic tendency where if you have a parent of grandmother with Melasma you are more likely to be affected than someone without the same genetic links. Men can also develop Melasma but it is very rare.

What are the types of Melasma?

There are 3 types of Melasma
  • Epidermal
  • Dermal
  • Mixed
Epidermal Melasma occurs close to the skin surface and is relatively easy to control. Dermal Melasma occurs in the deeper layers of the skin and is more difficult to treat. Mixed Melasma is a combination of the above.

Laser treatment the Er:YAG approach

There are two treatment methods available with laser in which to treat Melasma. The Er:YAG approach relies on resurfacing techniques to treat the condition where microscopic laser beams of a very small width penetrate into the skin causing the elimination of the cells that cause the Melasma and promoting rapid healing and new growth in that area whilst not affecting the surrounding tissues.

Laser treatment using the Nd:YAG approach

This works by directing short, intense laser pulses that are directed to the melanin inc the cells that are affected by melasma. This technique also stimulates new growth of collagen.

What is the price of treatment

Clinics vary in price but most laser treatment clinics start at around £500 and depend on the number of treatments needed.
